While I'm all for some house rules, I prefer to have it make sense, hence no Tyrant with Tau; you want goofy, go Apocalypse.
Really George, Gurnee was like that? That's my regular shop when I'm home, and while yes they drool over my girlfriend when she's in (and sometimes playing games with me) they are entirely respectful. Perhaps it was a new guy. Of course, I can say such things since I've been frequenting it for nigh on a decade now, but yea. Which, if you decide to settle in the area, will be good for gaming since I'm there. I like sitting and painting there more often than playing, since the paints are free. Sometimes though I get into games; especially during parts of the day when they're not busy. Nice and quiet in the store.
Hence, I find the best solution to the "overzealous employee" (it's actually part of their job description; it's all a bit of acting) is to just become a reg. It helps to have a friend come along to play as well. Become a common face and they'll know you well enough to only pester you for tournaments and big events. Or even not at all.

While house rules are nice and add some change occasionally...I think rules are important.
For example since we are discussing (kinda) the options of mixing armies or making own armies.
An acceptable use of this:
When Andrew let me create a special empire character for an ongoing serioes of battles we were having when the club first started. It was fun I am glad he did it. The character itself wasnt super powerful though and I think I overpaid for him (by my own doing as I set price).
Not picking on tom but since it has been being discussed for awhile now...I agree with andrew when it comes to the Tau/Tyranid combo...just to much for me...maybe a one time thing just to mess around and BS but that would be it.

GW seems kinda stuck rules wise. Players that just play for fun and the tournament crowd make writing one rules set tough. Even though I don't go to tournaments very often, I actually like tightly written rules and playing games that follow them.
I don't like the idea of paying the amount of money I do to have to come up with my own rules. And I almost always give companies the benefit of the doubt (with GW's track record, I have no reason to) that they playtest and balance their work.

That picture of the orc carnifex was awesome and I am not saying you cant convert the hell out of things...if someone were to mount an ethereal on a hive tyrant just cause it looked cool but it still followed the rules of just the ethereal...no problem there.

Eh'... The reason you do not see Ethereals is because they're rules are terrible, mounting em' on a Hive Tyrant just makes them look more awesome and die more quickly on the TT than they would've otherwise due to base size and model height (line of sight is drawn from the eyes of the model in 4th edition after all the level system is there is there for target priority and to deal with area terrain)... and the only good Ethereal costs almost as much as a Land Raider .

I am just saying as a conversion to include in your army to make a guy look cool= Ok
To actually field=not ok

oh andrew i went into the gw store in gurnee, and i always get harassed to buy something. i go in and start looking at paints because i needed 3 new colors, and the manager tried to sell me the gigantic paint set with every single color in it for five mins. He did the same thing when i went in a asked where the VC stuff was. I like the guy i can have a good conversation with him, but they need to lay off the used cars sales facade.

OOO Yay! more rant! I don't look at the damn GW site for 3 weeks and they change it to a online store with a few articles on painting and modeling. That's it. I'm done with their shit.

Is this good or bad??? I looked at their new site and, asides from being annoying in terms of loading length, seems to work well enough... but where did all the old articles go for the armies there's only like 5 real ones for each army

The new website is very slow because I'm guessing they haven't figured out how much bandwidth they need with the new site. Truthfully, I like the new site. It's about time they stopped using flash and went to a CSS site. The site could also be a bit slow because CSS does take more processing power to construct. If you see the CPU usage on your computer spike every time you open a page, that's probably why it's slow.
I don't mind the unit advertisements on the regular site because when I'm looking at an army, I do like to see how much some of their units cost money wise.

Yeah, I like to know how many small children I have to sell into slavery to buy miniatures too, but that's why I open the store in a new tab. I want my damn articles back.

This is being a bit picky on my part, but minis are expensive so I have the right to be... but I noticed on the Ogre Articles page, of the few that have anything meaningful to say and/or show (pictures), there are no pictures of the Ogre Slaughter Master or Bruiser... wtf GW couldn't you at least have made some conversions to inspire people to make these models that you don't sell? ... Oh well, that gives me the excuse to field Man Eater models as my heroes muwahaha ;D
