I was looking for new ways to sculpt fire because I'm working on a large Khador wreak (really not a fan of the Detroyer sculpt so I find it fitting that it is, well, destroyed) and I came across this: warpstorms.com/terrain/sculpting_flames/ Now, I love it. It's really awesome. But you won't find it on my wreak because I think it looks too much like oily smoke and I see the 'Jacks run on either wood or charcoal... especially in Khador. The oily smoke would probably be more at home in Menoth. Also, I would want to sculpt it, cast it in clear resin, paint the smoke as normal and the fire with inks and light the sucker so that it glowed. Yadda yadda. Speaking of lighting, I DID light up my wreak... it just has a nice inner red glow.... but that's a later post in a day or so....

I have never been a fan of modeling 'insubstantials' like smoke, fire, or magic. It is almost impossible to pull off without looking just... odd. Even that burning barrel looks strange. The only way to do it right, in my opinion, is to cast translucent flames (which is more work than even I am willing to commit to the effect). Unless you are Victoria Lamb... She can do fire and source lighting like nobody else. I have seen this diorama in person at GenCon, and the pictures don't even do it justice.

I think she did another one with 3 seraphim blasting into the open top hatch of a chaos rhino. She's amazing.
