Hey all, I was poking through Boing Boing and found this little gem of news. GW is making Board Game Geeks take down all the fanmade stuff. Here's the linkity: www.boingboing.net/2009/11/28/games-workshop-decla.htmlI seem to remember a time when they encouraged people to make senarios and such and share them. I think that's called building a community.

They only do that stuff when their IP is being violated. Of course, they may be overzealous about that, but that doesn't mean both sides of the story still have to be seen.

Agreed. I read thru that stuff last night. A little over zealous but it is their IP so they have the right.

IP or not, GW could take some lessons from the Privateer online community- which THRIVES, and gets a lot more people involved in its games. Pursue the people that are really infringing on IP: stealing game designs, or art for publication, whatever. Leave your own fans alone! They can only bring you free press! Or, alternately, they can bitch and moan and dissuade people from playing your games.

I dunno I am on the fence with it. It is their crap and if they dont want people messing with it, whatever. At the same time it would be nice if they tried to nurture the community, I just dont think they ever will. They are more interested in making sure their investors are making money than making sure the hobby is nurtured.
It is up to the community itself to nurture the hobby. Clubs keep the hobby goin, what with better tournaments than GW and good scenarios. I just dont count on GW for anything other than producing miniatures...as long as they continue to do that I am happy...the hobby part can be taken care of by the true community, that is clubs and independents.
I just really am no longer surprised or overly angered by GW's general Douche Baggery. I rarely buy straight from them anymore. Fantasy is my favortie game (warmachine coming in a close 2nd) so I wont boycott them. Ehh...
