This is just an update for anyone interested in Operation World War Two (formerly Operation Overlord). It is a game based on World War II that uses 1:72 scale, the average human height is approximately 20mm tall so its smaller than the 28mm heroic that 40k and fantasy use, and recreates battles in size between a company and regiment based combat strength, it also uses the metric system over inches and feet. A unique aspect of the game is that there are many manufactures (literally dozens or more if you count the smaller ones) of 1:72 scale miniatures so the models are cheap and plentiful (about $10 for 50 or so men and $7 to $30 for a tank depending on the detail you want, most of the iconic tanks can be purchased as fast assembly kits that are fairly cheap), most larger hobby shoppes carry several brands of models which can range from models specifically designed with easy of assembly in mind to super detailed kits for use in detailed dioramas.
The creator of the game has released a revised set of the rules that clarify some things and introduce some new principles to the game, such as off map artillery, as well as reworking the format of the tables and introducing a variety of counters to represent the status of the various units in the game. He also intends to introduce campaign books and other additions over time. The best part is the rule set is free to download and intuitive once you get used to the table system and become familiar with the style of game play, it is not an I-go-you-go system, it instead uses order cards that take a while to get used to but add a certain amount of drama to the game as a result.
