I'm going to have some cash coming in soon and I have the Hordes of Chaos army book from when it first came out. I remember some of you fantasy players saying that the escalation league would be a good place to start up. Any opinions on what I should get, or should I just go for what I think is cool and go from there?

the great thing about warbands is that they are standard armies, just at smaller points and smaller unit sizes..that said anything can be used in the army, except for lords of course. i do not have much experience with chaos, however, the other Ian,Sean, or Justin can, but i can make a few examples: - us.games-workshop.com/download/popup.htm?/games/warhammer/gaming/warbands/showcase/images/3.jpgunfortunately , chaos does not have a battalion available like other armies, so you'll have to concentrate on picking stuff up as ya go i think its best to choose which god you want, or undivided. get an idea of daemons become available

Regular Chaos Warriors or Marauders would be a good beginning choice. Both are core I believe and with the Chaos warriors you could easily convert some heroes.
I would go with your basic Chaos Warriors they are awesome in game and the new models look amazing.

Yea, freakin', Chaos Warriors are all Rambo's, since they're WS and I 5, S and T 4, and can have either a 2+ armor in CC or a 4+ and 2 attacks each. They're teh hotness. Plus the models are awesome; much better than the old crappy ones in the book. Chariots and knights rock too...hell you could have a Chaos army of all core choices and it'd kick ass.
But you also might want some of those daemons, like horrors which are always fun (and provide some shooting power) or screamers to deal with enemy artillery. But if you play Josh no worries, it will blow itself up on the first turn.

hmm... I wish I could find all of my old Horrors... painted them up nice for the 2003 or 4 Golden Daemon... the judges probably didn't like the fact that I added a layer of holographic glitter...
anywho, I was peering through the army book and saw that marauders can have great weapons. I'm thinking of going with Slannesh for a change and saw that I have about 12 Sisters Repentia... quick weapon swap and I think a scantly chick swinging a great weapon would make for a good Slannesh marauder.
Also, how useful are musicians and standard bearers?

Standards bearer and musicians are a must in fantasy unless it is unit that sucks and isnt worth the points being dropped into it.

Hey, thanks for the help everybody! here's the count so far... 12 Chaos Warriors w/ hand weapon and shield, champion, musician, standard bearer 12 Marauders w/ great weapons, champion, standard bearer ... not sure how good it's going to be, but they look nice working on a group of 10 chaos hounds.
I'm poking through my bitz box for parts for a hero.
