So all I have to say is Wow, what a weekend! With a mad dash to get everything painted to proper standard Jason, Justin, and I were ready to hit Adepticon.
Friday Jason and I met up with some old friends from Games Plus for some great games of Monsterpocalypse. Most popular thing was a blue rum drink and I found that the more my opponents drank the better my results were! But in all honesty these guys were great players.
Saturday we got started early with the two man. The room was packed with the two man and the 40K four man in the same room. Competition ranged from some newbies to seasoned vets.
Senario 1 Jason and I with P. Denny and P. Sorscha faced a Skorne and Merc force. We battled for the tie even though when dice down was called we were up on Control points but not enough to secure win. In a scoring snafu that plagued the tourney after the second round we discovered we lost as Sorscha went down and in a two caster battle the first tie breaker is caster kill... Good to know for future tournaments.
Senario 2 was control zone in opponents half... this was the most overall hated mission from what the surrounding tables were saying as it was just a slug fest kill box mission with control points. In this round we faced Trollblood and Skorne. We fought hard but these guys were some seasoned vets (skorne player won the best painted army award, Adam you would have won easy!!) and beat us on tie breaker army points in control zone. Good game and opponents were nice but too serious and not much into talking. Timed turns in the two man format put pressure on at all times on vet and newbie alike... I'll explain more later.
Senario 3 was circular 8" diameter control zones diagonal from each other. you had to move into opponents zone and hold it. This team from Tennesse was Cryx and Legion P Skarre and Thargosh. They tabled us for max points. Even though they extended the game (they could have won on senario three turns sooner) they were gunning for the Wreaking Crew award and had to wipe us out. It sounds bad but these guys were great and made for the best story as in the rush to take Sorscha out the Death Jack threw the Typhon at her. Attack missed and the next turn the Typhon couldn't get rid of it's fury and went nuts and attacked some bane thralls. Even with time running out for the mission the Cryx teammate, in the ultimate fluff mode, attacks the Typhon to show it its place! It was hysterical. Sorscha put up a good fight but could't get a kill for more points and got knocked out. This was also the the mission where Sorscha froze four Warbeasts and her Destroyers opened fire and missed both targets with back to back rolls of double ones!! DICE HATE ME!!
Senario 4 things were getting late and lots of people were dropping out. Jason and I actually were hoping to catch a bye so we could run out and grab some food before the Midnight Madness event started. But in the end the PP guys called us up to fill in. We played a Cygnar/Cygnar army Brisbane and Darius. this was a kill box mission. Neither side had a caster kill but cygnar forces on Brisbane's feat lit up our Jacks on his feat turn. In the end the Cygnar forces won the tie breaker with more points in the box than we did.
Overall the team tournament was a great experience. Our unfamiliarity with Hordes hurt us a bit as we faced alot of Hordes. There were a lot of great players and great looking armies. The snafu over the scoring that came up on round two put a damper on the event as a couple of teams dropped in a huff when their record changed. Can't blame them but it sucked all the same.
Last thing on the team tournament: If you don't like timed turns you will not like the team format. We had twenty minutes with one five minute extension per match. However you activate one unit/model at a time so coordination is key and everyone was making mistakes. In round one on the first turn one of our opponents forgot to allocate. Same thing happened to one of our round two opponents and then to me. I thought it made things exciting and interesting.
Okay so great experience but not so great record. BTW team tournament winner per PP Hacksaw (Andrew) was Khador/Khador team led by E. Vlad and E. Butcher.
Thoughts on Midnight Madness to come after I get some sleep!! ;D
