New Member, putting the feelers out

Hello All,

I was searching the internet for possible 40k gaming clubs in Illinois and came across the NIMGC. I wanted to introduce myself and get an idea if there is anyone in the club on the same page as me.

My name is Anthony. I am an NIU alumni and I currently live in Romeoville, IL. I have been playing 40k for 17 years (kind of). I haven't played in 2-3 years now. My main army is Eldar but I can field Tyranid, Space Marine, Space Wolf, Chaos, Imperial Guard, and Ork.

Here is the kicker, technically started 40k under the rogue trader rules but really got involved in 2nd edition. I find 2nd ed to be by far the best edition. The subsequent editions, although they make for faster games, don't hold a candle to 2nd edition. For those who don't know what I'm talking about - Dark Millennium (psychic phase), unbalanced armies, different armors, more powerful and complex weapons, more in depth characters. These are just a few things I remember different from 3rd edition. Things may have changed even more since.

I am looking to get back into the mix of things casually. However, I would like to get a 2nd edition game. Are there any old school players out there true to the old rules? Or any willing to move forward by taking a step back? I have the entire 2nd edition Codexes (I think) and full sets of all the necessary wargear, books, and psychic powers. I have also throughout the years collected home made conversion codexes including - dark eldar, necron, and tau (they were not around in 2nd edition and needed to be converted). If there are absolutely no interested parties I guess I would be willing to learn the new rules but really don't want to, I found 3rd edition to be tremendously boring after years of 2nd. PS - I will be rusty, haven't played in years.

I did notice there is a Frankfort chapter, I'm close, so that might work well. However, I'm will to do some reasonable travel.

We'd surely welcome you good sir! I am Andrew, the Secretary of the club. I started just before 3rd kicked in, so I have about 4 months worth of 2nd edition playing down; it was fun I agree! The changes from 3rd to the current 5th edition though are many, and it plays better. In the latest round of codexes, GW has been trying to get some of the flavor back from 2nd, with the capability to get awesomely themed armies out of each book, so that's cool.

But hey, I know I and probably one or two others wouldn't mind some 2nd edition games too. We have the two rulebooks and I have my codex at least, dunno about him.

Great! I have amassed a large collection so I can probably fill in a lot of missing pieces for anyone else interested. With 2nd edition rules I think I can field 20k in Eldar, which for those accustomed to the new rules isn't as much as your thinking. The points have decreased, for example The Avater used to be 300 points to field. But I do have a lot of old discontinued pieces. I forgot I can also field a Harlequin army. I'm on vacation all next week so I can go as early as then. Are there normal meeting/playing times setup already? Or is this how we get things moving along? I'm pretty excited. I sat down and looked at the calender and it seems time has flown by, I stated 2-3 years, I actually haven't played in more than 5 its seems!

The frankfort chapter would be more than willing to have you. though unlike the guys up in DeKalb we have very few 40K players. Mostly fantasy and warmachine in this neck of the woods. Only a couple of us play 40K (myself included) and I havent played since the new edition came out. Just keep your eyes on the frankfort pages for future meetings in this area.

I have/had the 2nd edition rulebook and codex imperialis... I brought it to the store and they seem to have walked off. Either that or they're still there.

I have them; didn't know if you forgot them or wanted them as a permanent fixture...in which case holding on to them is the better idea regardless.

I actually have the 2nd edition blood angels book but i sold off my blood angels last year cause i havent played since a month after 4th edition came out. I thought about picking up another army but it is expensive and i just spent about 175 dollars on vallejo paints so another army would have ot be picked up at a later date. I can't really justify spending 400 dollars on an army i'll probably play once .... I ahve a huge khador army (warmachine) that is collecting dust just haven't played in a long time liek 6-8 months before the new edition was out was the last time i played.

Sounds like fun if I had time. I voyage out to Dekalb from time to time to take part in 40k or Warmachine/Hordes; however, I live in Lombard...which is not horribly far from you.

Maybe if I have some free time, we can hit up a game. There is a battle bunker a mile from my place in downers grove.
