So day #1 at the con this year was the big uber huge 40k singles tournament. Whew. I wanted to break even at 2-2 at worst being this was a tourney bigger than anything I had seen. For each of the games, all the objectives were some kill points, objective marker, or specific unit-killing variation. This I felt made for a rather boring series of objectives, but ah well.
I played my usual ork list that most everyone from the club is familiar with....and I got a lot of comments throughout the day of people asking how I could win with such an unfocused army. Lolz =)
Opponent #1
This guy was a cool person from Canada who played a nifty looking traitor guard army. He admitted he doesn't play the army very often, and his game-play showed it. He was a great player, I could tell he had a lot of general experience....but his turns just didn't flow real well. It was table quarters for deployment, and I had first turn. I wedged up my army (which for reference I always set up as such), and drove it in asap. His manticore and basilisk were the two biggest threats I faced, and were what kept him in the game until the last turns. It ended up being a close game, but I managed to win and get 2 out of 3 objectives. Sweet halfway to my goal!

I don't recall where this person was from, but for paint judging and all that before the tourney started, I sat next to this guy for a while hoping I'd get to play his blood angels at some point in the event. 30 assault marines, 10 vanguard vets, 4 independent chars. He phased out a necron player and was paired up with me for round 2. Deployment was pitched battle and I had the first turn. I wedged up, then moved what I could to the middle of the board so I could have mobility to cover wherever he landed. After his descent, bad melta shots, and an ill-advised attempt to take out ghaz and his nobz with a 5 man vet squad, I went to work and won the game pretty handily. All 3 objectives and 2-0, I reached my goal!

Enter Tony Malave, an AWC-er. He fielded space wolves, typical two long fangs, two razorbacks, priest, death star squad of thundercalvary. It was pitched battle, he stole the initiative, I crapped my pants nearly. I managed to get the assault off on my turn one, and after about 4 rounds of combat I emerged victorious and ran down the rest of his entire army for the W. It was a great close game for the first half, and I got all 3 objectives. Holy crap I'm 3-0 can I really go all the way?
Opponent #4
This time I knew my luck had run out. It was dawn of war, other guy got first turn. He had 3 five man squads of long fangs with missle launchers, 3 individual typhoon land speeders, and about 6 razorbacks of assorted "fuck me sideways" weapons. After failing 15/16 4+ cover saves and immobilizing ghaz's trukk right against my table edge within the first round, it looked grim. I played one more round before half my army was decimated by rocket death and shook my head. I shook his hand, congratulated him on the solid win, and wished him best of luck sunday. After 3 rounds of great dice, good match-ups in my favor, and luck....it all crashed so quick. 3-1 on the day.
Overall the games were a great time, I greatly exceded my expectations in the end. After final scores were posted, I placed with 43rd out of 248 people. This included all of the soft scores like paint job, sportsmanship, etc etc in them. I cared more about the games and my true game ranking, so I crunched the numbers based on the top 16 that advanced and the subsequent 5 alternates. I would be somewhere between 22-30th place in that aspect, still a lot to be happy for. Soft scores included, Les placed 68th I believe and Tom Curzi got 76th.
Necrons next year!!
