So after a full day of two man madness on Saturday and getting to bed at about 3 am because of trying to get more tickets playing Iron Arena games I wake up Sunday thinking I will just get a game or two in for the Steamroller Finale... Jason was going to play in this tourney too but he was wiped and so I let him sleep in.
So the tourney is a two list 35 point standard steamroller format. I run Khador with my E-Vlad list (pretty much what I ran at the two man) and a P-Butcher list with Torch, a Kodiak, and full MOW Shocktroopers along with some other stuff.
So round 1:
I don't face anyone from the store... how refreshing! And play a guy from downstate who is running a E-Vlad list too!! The lists are very similar but he scraps IFP and Shocktroopers for Demo Corps and Doomreavers. Senario calls for caster to hold a flag that will allow you to score if you control the center zone... radial deployment.
I go first and move forward as fast as i can to get to the zone. My opponent moves faster and swarms the zone with doomreavers and demo corp. On turn two (when scoring starts) I decide to feat and try to jam up and kill some doom reavers figuring I can then mop up the demo corp with shocktroopers. I feat and mini feat to move my IFP into position. Take out some Doomreavers and then position and shield wall to prevent him from running through to softer stuff behind. On his turn he trys to run some doomies past my uber IFP and gets crushed due to free strikes leaving him at an extreme disadvantage. He moves Drago in ths zone to support Demo Corp which is now in a bad spot... Kodiak moves into the opposite side of zone to threaten Vlad. Long story short Great Bears decimate Drago IFP and Shocktroopers eat remaining doomies and demo corp. my Drago beats up Kodiak... dice go down and I win on points in control zone... .wait... I won!! ;D
Round 2: Instead of switching lists to use Butcher I go with E-Vlad again. My opponent from Milwaukee is someone Billy and Brian are familar with and they point out some issue to be aware of while playing him. He is running Khador and a Karchev list with only Beast 09 as his only jack. Supporting Karchev is winter guard rifle corp, Kovnik Joe, Drakhun, and Fenris.
I go aggresive and really move my troops up quick and he attempts to decimate my IFP with rifle corp. poor dice rolling and a defense boost to my IFP for being elevated means I come away with very minimal casualties. Next turn... surprise, surprise, I feat and move my uber IFP into combat with rifle corp. I mini feat to be defesive after chewing trough a number of them. In the meantime he separates fenris and the drakhun to the other flank to wipe out Eryiss and great bears... this takes longer than he expected as I have a run of Jason-esque tough rolls... I think at one point I make three in a row then follow it up with another three on a different character. In the middle he advances Karchev and Beast leaving Beast exposed. I promptly destroy beast and then surrond Karcheve with shocktroopers.
The end result is several rounds of Karchev camping focus and healing with mechanics till I kill them and then using fenris and the drakhun to pick off and attrition me down. At dice down I end up having less points remaining by four... he wins even though I am dominating him... Slightly frustrating but I had chances to kill some stuff that I didn't take... as a side note this was this player's tatic for the entire steamroller... camp focus and attrition forces to nothing and win on third tie breaker. In this manner he came in first... ah well... the winning streak ends
Round 3: Senario is destruction and due to steamroller format I have to run butcher. Opponent is Legion and Bethayne with lots of hex hunters and black frost shard.
I can sum this up quick... as I lost quickly.... He was fast and had a lot of range support so he was able to knock out the first objective on turn one... I moved up as fast as I could without leaving myself exposed. meaning I was not moving fast enough. Turn three he knocks out the second objective and wins. I was a bit frustrated and let it show... went back and apologized as he really did play a very smart game. It was just that the senario was perfect for his list and neither of my lists would have been able to slow him down much. So from 1-0 to 1-2... sad panda!
Round 4: I play Circle and Morovhana (sure I have spelled it wrong). Nice guy and beautifully painted army but I have no clue what the list does as I am not familiar with Circle or the caster. I go E-Vlad list.
The senario has two scoring zones running the middle of the table that you can control to score. I move up and have shocktroopers on left and IFP on right. He hits with some amazon hunter chicks and actually hurt my armor 21 shocktroopers... he gets aggressive and moves to nail Vlad on turn 4 first with spell... it misses and then by influencing repeatedly my manhunter next to Vlad... scary cuz if he succeds in wounding me I cannot make Vlad uber as he takes damage. Influence hits manhunter once but he misses Vlad... (sigh of relief there) other influence attempts miss. I storm his warlock but don't damage it enough to kill it. Next turn he feats and brings back a bunch of the amazon hunters and they lay in heavy on Vlad killing him.... super sad panda as I was (at least I thought) owning the board on this. Mistake was not killing the last warbeast with Drago and then moving the great bears in to finish her off...
So overall 1-3 and I really had a chance in two games so could have gone 3-1. The round three Legion match I would not have won no matter what. So I was happy with my results especially given how tired I was and the fact the durning rounds one and two I was coordinating to get all the kids up and out of the room and checked out! Craziness!!
Again it was a great time and good opponents. Even round 2 guy was okay although I am concerned over a couple of rule issues he had and one dice rolling thing... but again I could have won it regardless if I had just been aggresive and taken out Joe and the dog... next time!
So hopefully next year you guys can try to make it out for at least this one! ;D
