Yep... it sucks but if they make it better and give it more functionality then I am all for it. Besides I still have my cards...

I have it running on my Galaxy Nexus (I think that it is Android) and Jason has it running on his phone and NOOK. He says it runs great on the NOOK, just slow.
My Galaxy it twitchy when not on WiFi and unless I start the program on my phone with the phone on the side it won't start up. However once it loads and starts I see all the cards and can build lists. I haven't used the Fight functionality... maybe Thursday I will after running Infinity demos.

so you have to purchase the cards in order to build them in the list generator?

Technically you don't have to buy the cards to build a list but not all cards will be available.
If you do not buy the card packs then you will only have the casters/'locks, Jacks/Beasts, Units and Solos that were available in the Prime and Primal books.
Buying the card packs then will unlock all options available for viewing, building and for using with the Fight option.
At $60 for all the cards it seems a bit pricey until you compare it to purchasing either all the cards or all the Forces books. Considering when they add figures when a new book releases for free it is a pretty sweet deal. They have all the Colossals availabe and the two Gargautans are listed in their respective lists too.
Too be honest if you are looking to purchase this wait a week or two as they work out the knicks. They have been updating quite a bit lately so within a month I think all will be good.
As reference item, being able to view all the cards from all factions and such is really nice. No longer will I be surprised by stuff as lets face it I can't remember all the details of all the figures in this game! :-)

Has anyone tried this recently? Would it be any more convenient on a kindle fire instead of physical cards at games?

I use war room quite a bit and it runs very well on the tablet. The only strikes against it, from my point of view, is that it eats battery power like crazy. So if you don't have a place to plug in you may loose charge during a game.
I also would not use the head to head function... it is still to wonky and internet connection/3-4G is not great in most places to run it.
It runs pretty decent on the phone but if I could I would run it on a tablet.
