So after some fun inspiration, I decided to use a couple light liches with Shems...to that end, I went with a very strong magic army. I was expecting to maybe play some form of Elves, Skaven, or Ogres, but they were all busy. Bryan was the only player available last night as mister Dwarf, and he hasn't played in a while. Oh well, that's okay! I made my list as another general-purpose tournament list, long before I knew who I was playing.
Here's my list:
Arkhan the Black
Prince Apophas
Liche Priest - lvl 1, light
Liche Priest - lvl 1, light
30 Archers - banner, musician
6 Chariots - banner, musician, banner of eternal flames
Tomb Scorpion
Tomb Scorpion
3 Sepulchral Stalkers
3 Sepulchral Stalkers
6 Ushabti - great bows
Hierotitan
Casket of Souls
His list:
Dwarf Lord - great weapon, master rune of kragg, rune of stone, 2x rune of preservation, rune of cleaving, rune of fury
Runelord - great weapon, master rune of balance
12 Thunderers - command, shields
12 Thunderers - command, shields
25 Longbeards - command, shields, great weapons, rune of slowness
20 Ironbreakers - command, rune of battle
Organ Gun
Cannon - rune of forging, rune of reloading, rune of burning
Cannon - rune of forging, rune of reloading, rune of immolation
Scenario - The Watchtower
Spells:
Arkhan - 1, 2, 3, 4, 6
Liche Priests - Sig, Sig
Deployment:
Turn 1:
Tomb Kings 1
With him in control of the Watchtower, I needed to get him out. To that end, when deploying I plopped down the Ushabti to do just that. Turn 1 they charged the Thunderers in the tower. Other stuff advanced.
The first magic phase started off nicely, with 9 power dice to 7 dispel dice. 3 Shem's in a row got dispelled on the perfect number, one dicing each time no less. Soul Blight gets cast on the Thunderers in the Watchtower, while the Light of Death goes off, targeting Cannon 1. It passes its Ld test. It then bounces to the Ironbreakers, Organ Gun, and Cannon, but doesn't kill a single model. LAME.
The shooting phase was useful kinda, with the Archers putting a wound on Cannon 1 and the Chariots putting a wound on Cannon 2. Close combat was quick and easy; the Ushabti killed 3 while they did nothing in return at S2. They fled and bounced through the building, so the Ushabti occupied the tower.
End of turn 1, feelin' good.
Dwarfs 1
Thunderers 1 rallies and reforms to face the house in front of them. The Ironbreakers advanced. Moving right into shooting, the Organ Gun promptly rolled a 10, dishing out 7 wounds to the Ushabti. The Thunderers get 6 hits and 4 wounds on the chariots. One Cannon falls short of the Chariots, while the other manages to obliterate one.
Turn 2:
Tomb Kings 2
The Chariots fail a charge against the Thunderers 2. Suddenly, constructs and evil things burst among the Dwarf lines as every unit in reserve suddenly arrived. A couple scattered, but nothing the 7-10" moves couldn't compensate for (and Tomb Scorpion 1 scattered into a better place even). Since it was a River of Light, Sepulchral Stalkers 1 were affected by Net of Amnytok...meh, they weren't going to move anyway. Apophas marked the Runelord for death. The only spell to go off was Doom and Darkness on the Ironbreakers; everything else was dispelled. Still, it was nice to have max dice (7 + 3 (Arkhan) + 2 (Casket) + 1 (Channel)).
Shooting was impressive. Both Cannons were turned to sand for only 1 wound in return! (got 22 hits on Cannon 2...) The Archers put four wounds on the Ironbreakers, not enough to cause panic, sad. Prince Apophas unleashed a storm of death on the Longbeards, causing a mighty 17 hits...and no wounds...bah.
Dwarfs 2
The Thunderers moved up to occupy the house, while the Ironbreakers reformed to face the danger behind them. The Organ Gun turned around for a mighty 8 hits on the Scorpion looming behind it, but only cause 2 wounds. The other Thunderers put two more wounds on the Chariots.
Turn 3:
Tomb Kings 3
CHARGE!!! The Scorpions and Apophas all made their obvious charges, while the Chariots, needing a 9 to reach the Thunderers, got a 10 (though he caused two wounds on the way in. In the magic phase I maxed out on power dice again (rolled an 11). I got Soulblight on the Ironbreakers and pooped out a risky Purple Sun, though it only went 6 inches. Shooting took out six Ironbreakers, while the Stalkers offed seven Thunderers (from 24 hits).
In combat, the first one to resolve was the Scorpion vs Organ Gun. I only killed one crewman but they weren't able to do anything in return and held. I then resolved the Thunderers first. The Chariots got 14 impact hits and crushed 9, while the rest of the Tomb Kings killed off the rest. The Scorpion reformed and the chariots slammed into the Longbeards, which was then resolved. Apophas was able to cause two wounds on the Runelord, while the impact hits and other attacks got enough to win by five, despite losing two whole Chariots in the process. The remaining Longbeards fled but were cut down by Apophas and the remaining Chariot with its one wound.
Dwarfs 3
The Dwarf Lord and remaining Ironbreakers charged the Stalkers.
He dispelled the purple sun.
The two plucky Thunderers got a single long range hit on the final Chariot, stealing it's last wound away. In close combat, the Lord and his crew predictably ripped apart the Stalkers, turning to face the Scorpion.
Turn 4:
Tomb Kings 4
Without the benefit of the Runelord, my magic phase powered up back to full strength again, letting me get more spells off. The Lord and Ironbreakers were under the effect of both Soulblight and Doom and Darkness...and then the Light of Death hit them. Everyone but the Lord died . He fled into the river and was was granted WS and I 10. Woot?
In my shooting, the Ushabti put a wound on the Lord, while the Stalkers rolled a 2, 2, Misfire and killed a single Thunderer. I suffered a wound in return.
Dwarfs 4
The Lord rallied and the Thunderer missed. :ph43r:
Turn 5:
With max dice for magic again, I got Soulblight and Doom and Darkness off again on the Lord. The Light of Death sucked out his soul...
Finally, the last Thunderer was hiding under a bed in the house, but it wasn't enough. Two spear-sized arrows from the Ushabti still managed to find him, and that was it.
Victory to the Tomb Kings! They held the Watchtower, and were it to matter, I won 2150 to 525 VP.
Now if only wins like this could happen in tournaments!
