We have a foible in the new codex. Check out the Striking Scorpions on page 33. They all have the scorpion chainsword, which gives them +1 S. Over in the unit entry, you can give the exarch a powerfist by dropping the pistol, thus he has the chainsword and powerfist. Now, to you, does he: 1. ...when using the powerfist, only double his basic S, and not even add the chainsword at all because he's using the fist? [or] 2. ...when using the powerfist, double his S and add 1 from the chainsword? I would believe option 1, because in the main rulebook it says you may only use one close combat weapon per turn (except techmarines, those gits). Therefore only one bonus would be gained at a time. It's exactly the reason why my assault chaplain has a fist and crozius; if I want the initiative I'll use the crozius, and if I want the crushing power. It's being discussed on other forums too. p076.ezboard.com/fwarmongerboardfrm10.showMessage?topicID=3196.topicwww.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/view/topic/postid/123669/forumid/15/tpage/1/Default.aspx#123776

wow this is a rule i actually know.
basically how it goes is if you want to use the powerfist you gain the double basic str. if you use the chainsword it's only +1. rules strictly state you can only gain bonuses from one weapon especially where str is concerned. although, if a psychic power is used to add to str (for instance, sisters of battle hand of the emperor) that modifier will stack on top of what other str mods you have as it is only temporary. unless it says in the new eldar codex about some asterix rule that they benefit from both, you just go back to the basic rules.
this does bring an interesting question though such as if you have a champion with a powerfist and a lightning claw, do you benefit from both? as far as I have seen people that use that combo, they double str, but strike last and re-roll wounds. legal? maybe...

Definitely only one or the other. It's clearly stated in the rulebook so why are people even arguing this?

I dunno, they're stupid? Maybe they are trying to get the S 8 scorpion exarch back.
Glad you guys see it as simply as I do.

yea I would agree...that would be a way high strength for a single unit that would be unfair kinda...thats my opinion and I play them.
