Hello everyone! My name is Vic Mohammad and I was steered here by Caleb becaue I'm looking to get into the 40k scene. I'm a junior here at Northern and a friend of Caleb's from the speech team.
I'm looking to start building an Imperial Guard army for Warhammer 40k. I'd like to have some kind of balance between troops and tanks. As with most gmaes I've started playing, I'd like to start slowly with cheaper plastic models and kind of move forward from there. If anyone could steer me in the right direction to get started I'd be real appreciative. I've got about 100-150 dollars to spend right off the bat, but if anyone knows of special sales or any friends who have models to sell - I'd be all ears.
As for other games, I've got a ~1500 point army of Dwarfs from Warhammer Fantasy Battle and ~30-40 or so Necromunda figures, House Escher. I've also played Mordheim and have a Blood Bowl team as well. I've also played Magic, Rage, and a laundry list of table top games.
Thanks in advance!

Well if anyone can give you information on imp guard it would probably be Popgoestheworld a.k.a. Adam. He is the closest thing we have to a Imp guard Guru...let me be the first to say welcome to the boards and hopefully we will get a chance to meet you at one of our meetings.

Well, I play guard...barely. Unless you're just fascinated with tanks, the more infantry you can get on the board the better for guard. Your guys die faster than they get shot, so it's always nice to have lots of them. The Battle force is a nice start actually. All the stuff in there is stuff you're going to want anyways, and it's $20 cheaper than buying it seperately. I'd check for em on Ebay if you aren't in a hurry to get something right away. Guard only have one hq choice so you'll have to buy a command squad sometime, and another box of infantry to have enough guys to deploy a troop choice. After this, what you buy really depends on how you want to play. You really should look at the doctrine system in the Guard codex and see what you like. Guard armies can be surprisingly flexable in how you build them.
Oh, and keep in mind, even if you can't deploy a legal force you'll find someone who will be willing to play you at the meetings...or you could always bring our dwarves till you get your guard up and running.
Welcome to the Club.

Indeed, welcome new member!
I agree with Luong that the Battle Force would be a good place to start. They are $90, so if you were willing to buy two of them, you'd have 2 tanks, 40 regular men, and 6 heavy weapons; a very good start. As for the HQ unit you'll need, you can convert them from normal guys, or a blister or two. That is a cheaper alternative to the pricey box. I have extra men to do that with if you'd like them, as I'm slowly slowly starting Imperial Guard as well.

ya i would definitely look on ebay, unless you want to paint your own stuff. you can find some really good deals there. that's basically the unofficial club store haha. I play dark eldar and witch hunters, so I may not be of great help to ya, but what I do know like the other guys were saying is that taking a lot of troops with weapons galore and then maxing out your heavy slots is the way to go. do i hear 3 battle cannons? ouchy. my name is matt by the way. nice to meet ya.

Another little hint for you for guard that I have learned is handy from playing them, is take as many vox casters(I thinks thats what they are called) as possible it allows any imp guard unit that has one to use their leaders leadership which is very helpful for an army whose troops go down fast.

Thank you all for your quick suggestions. I now have a series of questions if you could all answer them?
1. Those battle forces are plastic, correct? What kind of condition are they usually in? I've almost exclusively dealt with pewter models in the past. Additionally, how difficult is it to put together those tanks?
2. Should I buy the "normal" battle force or the Jungle Fighters with the 2 AT-ST looking things?
3. I was planning to use my necromunda Escher models as the "sergeants" or whatever for each individual squad, that ok?
Finally, thanks everyone for the offers to sell me their models, that's really cool of you.

1. In the "normal" battleforce, all the models are plastic. I haven't heard or done anything about the Leman Russ tanks, but so far as I can tell they put together really well.
2. Yes, the normal one would be better. Unless you want an army of Rambo's.
3. They would work all right for me.

My Imperial Guard force is the 67th Necromundan Expeditionary force, and I actually used tons of Necromunda minis in it's construction.
As for general Army construction...
If you want to win, Tons of troops/commisars/vox casters will do the job. Vehicles die so quick you won't even know where the points go. Hellhounds are the shit, sentinels (the at-st lookin things) aren't even worth the trouble. For heavy support, buy Basilisks, and put them behind terrain for indirect fire. Give your troops as many plasma guns as you can, and you will have a hard to beat Imperial Guard force. Most of your kills will come from the mass fire coming from your basic Platoons (esp. if you give them the Sharpshooters doctrine)
If you want to have fun with it, buy what you like. My guard doesn't win that often, but I have had alot of fun painting and constructing it. I just bought the minis I liked, and made my army from there. For instance, I don't follow ANY of the rules I just told you to go by. But, it is up to you. If you want to paint a million guardsmen, more power to you.
Like Andrew said, 2 of those Battleforce boxes will be a good start. If you are serious about buying vehicles, I've got a guy who will sell you anything you need for 20 bucks each(Lemans, Chimeras, Basilisks, you name it). Let me know if you are interested.

I'm very interested in tanks, especially at those discounted prices. I'm in the process of settling my finances to purchase at least one battleforce, perhaps 2. If I can find someone to buy my dwarf minis at like, half the sticker price or a little more, I'll be set. I look forward to meeting you all on Thursday.

Well, everybody let me know what you are interested in, I will talk to my contact and see if I can still get them. Most of the stuff is painted a weird red/black camo scheme, but it is nothing that can't be painted over. The Lemans have magnetic sponsons too, so you can put them on or off. I'll need money before I can do anything though. This guy is a consumate businessman. [edit: new topic moved to trading post section to keep this thread on track ]

This sounds all like great advice, tentatively I'll be buying a battleforce this Saturday. I'll either be ordering it via the warstore (in fact, is anyone else making an order anytime soon and we could put it all together and see if we hit that 500 dollar mark for extra savings?).

If you want a good IG army first you have to buy atleast 1000 troops plus about 100 support tanks. Then equip all of your veterain sergents with bolters, bolt pistols, las pistols, plasma pistols, frag and krack grenades and what the heck melta bombs too, oh and don't forget to give them all medalion crimsons. Um, these upgrades should all be equiped individualy to all of your sergents. next you'd probably want to make a custom vehicle that has 30 struckture points, 10 void shields, AV 9 all around, and immoble. The best weapon to throw on that vehicle would be a mega, gattling, short barrled and then long barreled las gun. Besides these helpfull tips I'd say you have all the freedom in the world.
[Yea, he's just joking. But in effect he's saying it's up to you.]
