Being the new guy that nobody knows yet, figured I'd share my army with everyone. I've had this army for slightly over three years.. they've seen one game so far.. and then, not even the whole army did. And this is the first time in years that I'm actually going to have a fully painted army. So, without further ado.. the army... in progress: I hope to have it done before I get to DeKalb... but we'll see how well the packing goes. Just over a week left.

Looking good. Hope I get to be smashed by them sometime this semester. Good luck with the move, it can be a pain in the ass.

I got the bases all gravled last night, so the only thing left to do is basecoat all the parts that are supposed to be metallic on 40 of them and then go back with the metallic paint on all of them and finally a light wash of ink. I'm thinking bronze for the metallic parts to go with the overall tone of the miniatures. But a nice rusty steel is in the running too. I hope to be able to smash you with them. Or at least put up a good fight. I'll put the list up in the army list section while my codex is still unpacked. Yeah, I know about moving... this'll be my ninth move in almost 25 years of life. Hopefully I'll be sticking around DeKalb for a while.

From what you are describing I think they will look pretty good when finished. I wanna see the final result. Make sure you put up some finished shots when you are done.

Well, here's one assault squad and the dreadnought done. certainly not going to win any golden daemon or best painted army, but I'm happy with it for a playing army. I certainly don't want to spend 10 hours on each model... especially since I added 21 yesterday from old stuff that I found in a box. I like how they're rather dirty looking, kind of a "Yeah, we've been fighting a lot recently, not sitting in our fortress-monestary looking pretty."

Those look pretty damn cool. I've been working on expanding my existing army this summer a lot, so I want to get my units onto the field to take names and kick ass. Job well done!

Yays! I'm glad people appreciate grungy marines. The lighting in the picture doesn't do it much justice, but I keep thinking that the paint scheme on the dreadnought looks like something out of Starcraft. And don't get me wrong, I like the clean, fresh off the Thunderhawk marines, but you see it all the time. I think if I do another marine army, I'm going to model them with battle damage, bullet holes, fallen down, maybe a leg or arm missing here and there. Might try some exposed crew compartments on the vehicles. Probably remnants of a chapter that has been campaigning deep in enemy held territory cut off from supplies... it could be fun.

I regard my marines as fresh all the time, never being caught behind enemy lines (because they wipe them out =P). Plus it's just the way I started painting so many years ago.
However, the mud marine also looks very good to me. I like yours a good bit, and can't wait to play them.

Thanks. I think my fascination of the grungy marines stems from my love of the fluff involving the various chunks of chapters waging wars without supplies, cut off from the rest of the imperial forces (for example, Space marine codex, Captain Shrike entry, Targus VIII Orks). Or from imagining them being forced to make use of their enhancements that let them eat pretty much anything or not sleep for weeks at a time. Or even the few that I've seen about running out of ammo and having to combat-knife the enemy to death. Good times.

.......... Games-Workshop really needs to add that level of fluff to the other armies or just name the game "Space Marines 40K" already elsewise I'm going to buy a War Machines army instead of expanding on my Tau.

Well to be fair Tau have not been around nearly as long as Space Marines have so it is understandable why space marines have more fluff. Though I would also like to see Games Workshop put a little more emphasis on other armies.

I'd also like to see GW write the Codicies from that race's point of view instead of the Imperium's. Everything is Imperial report this, and imperial report that, and stuff that the inquisition got off of rouge traders that talked to Eldar.... it's kinda frustrating. And this isn't originally my rant. It's Trie's (my little friend who's going to be playing Necrons), but I am starting to feel the same way. That way you would get more fluff... and probably better fluff.

yeah i gotta remind myself that Tau are relatively new to 40k and happy to have them as i love the anime/mech theme. even so, when over half the people who play 40k play space marines... some good might be done to leave the Emperor's Chosen be for the moment. Although I gotta admit, to me, Tyranids and Eldar of all races seem to be the most potentially fun and powerful in maches when it comes to tactics (space marines are relatively generic which i guess partly explains their appeal as far as gaming to "newbies". ironically i chose the one trick pony race lol). so if not war machine i'm definatly looking at Tyranids for the lovely lovely modeling opportunities.
