My question is to anyone playing 40k. On a dreadnought, the light you can add as an option, is it really worth having that. I ask first because I'm pretty sure the light is this clunky looking thing packaged to look like a flashlight with a rain shield and looks out of place on my model. Second, i thought at first it was a targeting array for the missle launcher then was like, what the hell is this thing?

I am not positive what the rules are for it but if it is anything like spotlights or nightvision gear for other armies...it allows you to see farther in games that are supposed to take place at night...so it is very limited...in our club if you didnt model but included it in your points for a game no one would object as the WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET rule I think should only apply to tournaments or things that you pay to participate in.

It would'nt be worth paying for it if you know you won't be playing a Night Fight. That being said, it is only 1 point anyway and so won't break the bank. I still find I can fill that 1 point easily with many other things (frags!) but to each their own.
In the next codex (or now, if you play Blood Angels or Dark Angels) it will be included on all vehicles automatically. Here at the club, even in tournaments, you could probably get away with just saying and paying, even if it's not modeled. There are a variety of ways it can be explained.

That's good, because i have to say that thing is big, bulky, and looks ugly on the model. Being off to the back and side of the Dreadnought makes it look really off. Really didn't want to add it on to the mini.

excluding the summer months i've only joined up at the NIMGC and miniatures in general for a little over a month last semester, but from what i've seen people really don't care if your model is off if you pay for whatever might be missing and let them know. more fun to experiment as it is anyway rather than sticking to just what's on the model.

The only place that I've seen WYSIWYG applied is at official things like tournies... and I don't think anyone really uses night-fight all that much. and even though it let's you see better, it makes that unit a beacon for shooting death.

True, nothing like a flashing signal lantern the size of your cannon barrel to scream, "I'm over Here, shoot over here!"
