The matchup:
IG: Commissar Yarrick, extra commissar with fist of doom; bunches o'guardsmen, 5 halflings with rifles; 10 stormtroopers; 2 sentinels with scatter lasers; armored fist squad; leman russ w/multimeltas, 2 demolishers w/multimeltas (sounds about right)
Ultramarines: Chaplain leading 10 assault marines inc. veteran sergeant wielding an oversized hammer; another chaplain leading 7 terminators with two assault cannons of solid death; my usual anti-tank melta tactical squad; an extra 6 tacticals with plasma and lascannon; dreadnought w/droppod, assault cannon, heavy flamer; multimelta landspeeder; landspeeder tornado; predator destructor with lots of dakka, pred. annihilator with freem-ing overabundance, and a whirlwind just for kicks.
We played up a straight kill-em-all game, which myself I'm not too fond of but since he was pretty new I felt good about it, even against those nasty ordnances.
It was a slaughter.
When he conceded, he had a badly damaged chimera and about 6 guardsmen left. I had used cover and my weapons to blow massive holes in his lines. In my first turn the terminators, predator, and tornado accounted for about 20 guardsmen or so, maybe more. Had some of the armored fist squad not been behind the chimera, my large tactical squad would've mowed down 12, but only 6 were visible. My dreadnought landed right where I wanted, between everything of his. It roasted and exploded 7 guardsmen, came about to squish Yarrick's heroic charge, then in the next turn rended away the leman russ with its assault cannon. Zoikes!
I lost 3 assault marines and a terminator. My rhino was immobilized and lost its stormbolter. I guess it wasn't entirely fair to pit a 7 year veteran against a more or less new guy, though he knew what he was talking about most of the time, but then he challenged me, and one can't turn down a warhammer challenge!
Caleb was my witness, he was there to prove just how much he lost by. I should tally up VP sometime to find out. He actually didn't get any points now that I think of it, except for my rhino. 29 for him, wooo...
