I've been perusing over what to order this weekend, and it looks that I will be purchasing (2) Battleforces - 1 Cadian and 1 Catachan. I really like the walkers looks, so I wanted the Catachan. That will give me:
(40) Guardsmen (6) Heavy Weapons Teams (1) Command Group [Catachan] (2) Sentinels (1) Leman Russ Tank
I want to round that out with the 2 Basilisks from Andrew's Friend.
I was trying to add up all the points for this and I seem to come horribly short from the 1,500 level.
On page 44 of the IG Codex, it shows that One "Troop" choice [Defined as a Platoon] consists of 2-5 Infantry Squads. The squad is comprised of 9 Guardsmen and 1 Sergeant.
It then shows that 2-5 Infantry squads is 60 points + Equipment + Upgrades. Does that mean I can field 5 squads, of 10 men (50 Total Models) for only 60 points?
Something tells me I have to be reading this wrong.

Haha, very wrong. It's meant that each squad is 60 each + upgrades. Even so you will be only collecting about a 1000 pts worth, without the basilisks at least (coming from Adam's friend, not mine =) ).
I personally wouldn't like mixing Catachans and Cadians in the same army because I like all to be the same, but then its up to you. Here's a handy tip: heavy flamers suck on sentinels. Use autocannons or lascannons. How with those bitz you say? Use the guns from the heavy weapon sprues. It'll take some jimmying but it will work. Give missile launchers or heavy bolters to your infantry.

Each individual squad of 10 troops is 60 points + Equipment + Upgrades. To constitute a single troop choice, you must take one HQ squad with a junior officer (5 troops), and two squads (10 troops each) for a total of 25 troops.
To fulfill your troop requirements you can take two full Platoons, or, A full Platoon and an Armored Fist squad, or, A full Platoon and a Conscript Platoon (which are huge), or, take the Grenadier Doctrine and take Storm Troopers as Troops (but they can't deep strike or infiltrate).

I would not get catachen's simply because as a starter army guard is hard enough to use, catachen's are even hard to use well.

I actually like the idea of some individuality between squads. I think I'm going to end up using 4-5 squads of 10 men and I want each to be from a different planet or different background.
Anyway - thanks for the clarification.
Now, it says that the doctrines affect a "regiment" - what the hell is defined as a regiment? Does that mean your entire army?

Ok, through Adam's (popgoestheworld) advice via PMs - I think I've...somewhat figured out where I'm going with this. I'm going to purchase (2) Cadian Battelforces and then 3 Hell Hounds from his friend. That would give me:
(40) Guardsmen in 4 squads of 10. (6) Heavy Weapons Platforms (2) Lemun Russ Tanks (3) Hell Hounds
I'm also going to use 10 Necromunda Escher Figures as my "Hardened Veterans" elite squad.
So all I'd be short is an HQ - which I am trying to convince Andrew (Seahawk) to sell to me, regardless of his reluctance at first. I think he's just trying to tease me by saying he has them available and just won't sell them - but I can be very persuasive.

You will need at least 15 men altogether for your command squads; 1 HQ and 2 for Troops. You can get 5 from me

if i were you i would not go vehicle crazy. they tend to be very inconsistent, especially if the other person goes first and starts poppin away at all of them with las cannons, rail guns, exorcist missiles, what have u. that would be a huge part of your army possible gone after the first turn. mix it up with some vehicles and some infantry. like 50% of points devoted to each.

It already is. With the amount of vehicles he has, he will be fine. They won't die as quickly as others if used properly.

I suggest buying some assualt weapon figures with plasma, melta, flamers, or grenade launchers. This will add an extra punch to each squad. Personaly I would take plasma guns in your regular squads and either plasma or melta weapons in your harden veterain squads if your taking them because there are quite a few space marine or 3+ save armies in the club including my own.

But, keep in mind that you are only BS 3. That means you will only hit half of the time, and Sharpshooters can't re-roll 1's from Plasma and Melta weapons (the good ones). Not to mention, the 20 points you spend on giving plasma guns to your regular IG squad would be 1/3 the cost of another squad all together. In the long run, mass fire will do more damage than a couple of BS 3 plasma guns. Flamers, at 6 points, are alot of fun since there is no roll to hit.
Giving your hardened veterans special weapons is the best bet, as they can take 3 of them, they infiltrate, and they have BS 4.

Does anyone have random bitz of plasma guns to put on my guardsmen? I just ordered them a few minutes ago and I'd rather just use bitz rather than ordering whole new figures?

If nothing, think of interesting conversions! "Counts as" weapons are doable amongst us here. I personally think the new special weapon models have guns much bigger than normal, but that's just me. Or, can get the bits themselves from here: www.battlewagon-bits.com/category/space_marines.tactical_squad/ Scroll halfway down and you'll find your special weapons =).

Ok, those bits are expensive - at least, more expensive than I think they rightfully should be. Adam told me I could find places that would sell solo sprues of cadian infantry to the tune of 5 models for 10 bucks.
Does anyone have the links he spoke of? I checked GW site and I CANNOT FIND singular bits to order, so if anyone could help?

If I were you, I order if from one of the gw stores, or get someone to order it for you since club members go all the time. The store get's bitzs orders in with their regular weekly shipment of product so there's no shipping cost. If you get it online, it's a $7 minimun to ship. Not worth it when you're buying something that's $10.
And yes, just like ordering online, you still get free bases.

Thanks for the link, Adam. I didn't understand about the whole wrench icon thing.
How do I uh, order from a GW store and does anyone have any reccomendations? I mean, I might order these from the warstore if possible - Neal was a really nice guy when I chatted with him about my battleforces and I like to reward companies that treat me fairly.

Neal is definitely a real nice guy, so yeah, order from him if you can, but he dosen't do bits orders. Too much of a hassle (They don't come maked with who's order it is), and he doesn't make much of a profit on them.
TO order from a GW store, simply ask where there bits ordering station is. It will have a sheet for you to fill out with your product numbers (The long humber that's under each individual part on the website). They also have a complete product catalogue at the order station so if you need to look up anything, it's there. The staff can help if you have any questions. You pay for it there, and they call you when they get it in.
