Doctrine Question:
When it refers to a "unit" that means one specific model right?
For example, Sharpshooters: "This ability costs 10 points for a unit and can be applied to to any guard infantry unit with at least one BS-3 model".
So, does unit = the 2 squads of 10 guys plus the Lt. HQ at 10 points? Or is it 10 points per squad? Per Model?

All right, I am really confused about this hierarchy of stuff and the book doesn't seem to be helping. Regiment - The entire army. Platoon - 2-5 Squads of 10 Men + (5) Additional Men from the Lt. HQ Squad - A squad of 10 men and may include a sergeant. Unit ? Single model? One squad? The entire Platoon? What?

It's per squad. Some dectrines require that all squads that can have the upgrade take it. I don't think sharp shooters is one though. Also keep in mind since it says Guard infantry unit, those are the only units that can take the upgrades; there is a list of what counts as "Guard Infantry" at the front of the doctrine section.

It's only confusing because GW does not use terms the same in all instances. They need to standardize their terms and define them all.

Per squad. So, for a Platoon of 2 Squads of 10 men and the Lt.HQ it would cost 10 points for each of the squads, and another 10 for the Lt. HQ?

I plan to buy my fire support teams (the heavy weapons crews) as part of my HQ, not heavy support as to free up space for tanks.
A fire support squad is defined as 6 guardsmen making 3 crews at 35 points.
So, for 35 points, I get 3 crews and then have to pay for their weapons on top of that cost, right?

Yeah, each crew must have a heavy weapon, so you have to pay for 3 weapons.

Can I "attach" my fire support squads to my infantry platoons? I know that I can make 2 guardsmen into a heavy weapon team, already, but I'm curious if I can take the HQ Fire Support squads and add them to the infantry platoons.

No you cannot. They are deployed as their own unit of 6.

Ok it says that each "sub unit" of a Command Platoon may be deployed invididually. So that means that each Fire Support Team (3 teams of 2) have to be deployed together.
As in, Fire Support Team A (the three groups together) and then Fire Support Team B (the other three groups) must be deployed together. Right?
Also, for the purpose of wounds - may a fire support team continue to fire if one of the team is killed?

Well, if you have two fire support units, such as in your example, then the two groups can be deployed at different ends of the table. They have to number 3 teams each is all, per the codex.
If you take only a single wound on a team, then yes it can still fire. However, I just realized that if you use the big bases that are provided, then say you take 3 wounds. You must kill off one base as per pg 27, in the "creatures with more than one wound" section. GW was very, very dirty with this.
Say you have a anti-tank unit of 3 rocket launchers. The way the models are done, as I did with mine, they can be based seperately. Thus, you have 6 seperate models in the unit. When you take 3 wounds, they can all be on the loaders, while the actual launchers are still usable.
However, if you choose to model them on the base, they are essentially two wound models I'd think (this is my interpretation; debatable). Now if you took 3 wounds, then you'd have to remove a whole base, and put 1 wound on another. What sucky! Hate you GW!

That is retarded .
So my big based fire support teams (I used the bigger bases cause I think they look cooler with the tripod and everything), are sucky.
I am going to debate this to the end of the earth and just use dice or some other marker to say people have died.
Also, the Lt. HQs for my Infantry Platoons can take Heavy Weapons, I saw. If I'm not mistaken, Adam gave his HQ a las cannon but modded it to be carried by a single individual. I did a similar conversion last night. Do I still have to have some guy following him around as his "loader" or whatever, or can I just declare the Las Cannon Carrier to have 2 wounds and take one less person in that command HQ?

No, cannot do the last thing you wanted. And amongst the club I wouldn't mind just putting a dice on to show the loader has died. You must always have the loader. There is no special "add a wound, subtract a loader" deal. You don't have to have a guy looking like his loader, but he obviously cannot be given any other special equipment.

Can the loader fire or anything? Cause I think Adam's LT. HQ squad was only 4 people (Lt., Vox, Las Cannon Guy, and a Melta Gun).

The faq for guard states that the big base is only to make movement easier. YOu treat it as seperate models still.

With Mortars, I see they are Guess Range 48''. I read over the rules in the 40k main rulebook, but I wanted to make sure I understood what was going on.
You place the blast template where you want it to land, if it is within 48 inches - everything is great. If it is beyond that, it misses automatically. You then roll a Scatter Die + 1d6 (if line of sight exists) or +2d6 (if line of site does not exist) and play out the damage like that.
That sound right?
EDIT: Someone answer the question above this one.
